How we got here
Proximus 5 grew out of years of singing together in other Winnipeg ensembles. Those overlapping musical lives became a group of their own.
We sing unaccompanied music from across the ages — folk, contemporary covers, contemplative classics, and new arrangements — with an emphasis on closeness: between the five voices, between performers and audience, and between old music and the present moment.
Since then, Proximus 5 has performed to sold-out hometown audiences and taken its music beyond Winnipeg, including appearances in the U.S. Midwest and at Podium in Montreal.
The singers
Scott grew up in a family where singing together was second nature. His Winnipeg choral work has included Canzona, The Winnipeg Singers and Dead of Winter, along with solo appearances with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. He has also represented Manitoba in the National Youth Choir and Canada in the World Youth Choir.
Alongside performing, Scott works as a choral teacher, director, arranger, composer and clinician.
Dan has been part of Winnipeg’s vocal scene since 2000, performing with ensembles including The Winnipeg Singers, Camerata Nova, Canzona, the Canadian Chamber Choir, Antiphony and Polycoro. He studied voice with Mel Braun at the University of Manitoba and has appeared in opera as well as concert work.
His solo work has included Handel’s Messiah with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Okanagan Festival Singers. He also sings with the Mamas and Papas tribute band The Very Groovy Things.
James is an ensemble singer and soloist whose work has overlapped with fellow Proximus singers in Polycoro, The Winnipeg Singers, Dead of Winter and Antiphony. His theatre credits include work with Dry Cold Productions, Rainbow Stage, Shakespeare in the Ruins and the Little Opera Company, alongside years of church and concert solo work.
A graduate of the University of Winnipeg’s Theatre program, he also holds an MPhil in Economics from the University of Cambridge and works as a professor of business and politics at Canadian Mennonite University.
Paul has performed as both soloist and chorister with Manitoba Opera, Little Opera Company, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Canzona, Polycoro and Dead of Winter. His recent stage work includes Pilate in the St John Passion at the Winnipeg Baroque Festival.
He is a co-founder of Polycoro and has served in arts governance with Manitoba Opera and Flipside Opera & Art Song Collective. Outside music, Paul works in private wealth management.
Jereme is a Manitoba-born bass who has been singing and making music from an early age. After studying music in Brandon, he became deeply involved in Winnipeg’s choral community, performing, recording and touring with groups including Polycoro, Canzona, Dead of Winter, The Winnipeg Singers and the Juno-nominated Canadian Chamber Choir.
When he is not singing, he is usually pursuing another enthusiasm: cooking, baking, travel, and whatever food scene he can explore next.
